For the past 18 years, Dr. Gehlbach has managed the medical and surgical care of patients with vitreoretinal diseases and the need for complex eye surgery.

He is a lead surgical attending on a high volume, tertiary referral and teaching service. His patient population is derived from a broad national and international referral base. Many of his patients are seeking expert opinion on next steps in the management of difficult or complex cases, including but not limited to, complications with prior surgery or surgery requiring the coordination of multiple surgeons.

Dr. Gehlbach was one of 2 out of 135 Wilmer physicians (the only Associate Professor) recognized in 2015 by the Johns Hopkins Medicine Clinical Awards. He was nominated for the Excellence in Service and Professionalism Award.

Dr. Gehlbach provides Vitreoretinal surgery for the Assistant Chief of Service, General Eye Service and indigent care, in years in which the Assistant Chief of Service is not retina trained.

In addition to his internationally recognized practice at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Gehlbach previously built up a thriving satellite practice at the Greenspring Station of Johns Hopkins University. He spent 5 years building the clinic, then, once it matured he seeded the practice of new junior faculty members.

System Innovation and Quality Improvement efforts within JHM

Dr. Gehlbach is a present member of the Perioperative Care Committee, the Wilmer Surgical Enterprise Executive Council and of the Wilmer Operating Room Review Committee where he has contributed to crucial quality improvements and cost savings including: enhanced utilization, consistent quality assurance and the implementation of service block times and automatic block release for surgeons when away and other.

Participated in the Physician Extender training program as well as completing the Lean Management Training Program and the Perioperative Management Program.
